I heard a fox screaming like a banshee shortly after moving into my new home and I thought someone was being assaulted beneath the dark canopy of pines and birch trees that surround the house. There are certain sounds you hear in the country that would be defined entirely differently in the context of a city.
I live in the middle of the woods these days, but not just the middle of any woods. I live in a part of Michigan many people don’t realize exists – the Upper Peninsula. Even within the context of the Upper Peninsula, you don’t pass through this place accidentally. I live just a few minutes away from another peninsula, one that jets out into Lake Superior: the Keweenaw Peninsula. The nearest major city is Minneapolis, but it’s an eight-hour drive away.
